Starting Year 7
At Tuggerah Public School, we recognise that the move from Year 6 to high school is an important milestone for both students and their families. Working closely with our local public secondary schools and the NSW Department of Education, we aim to ensure every student experiences a smooth, positive and well-supported transition.
Our transition program is designed to help students feel prepared, confident and excited about the next stage of their education. Key features of the program include:
- Orientation opportunities, such as visits to high school sites, participation in taster lessons, and question-and-answer sessions with teachers and current students.
- Collaborative planning between Year 6 and Year 7 staff to share information about each student’s strengths, learning needs and wellbeing.
- Wellbeing support programs, including small-group activities, leadership and resilience initiatives, and additional support for students who may require it.
- Family partnerships, with information sessions and ongoing communication to help parents and carers understand the transition process and support their child at home.
We are committed to equipping our students with the confidence, independence and sense of belonging they need to thrive in high school and beyond.

What to expect in high school
High school brings new experiences and routines, including:
- a larger school with more subjects, teachers and classrooms
- a timetable with different lessons each day
- moving between classrooms and carrying books and equipment
- more independence and responsibility for homework and study
- new friendships and opportunities to join activities and clubs.
Before your child starts Year 7
As your child prepares to transition from primary school to high school, our Year 6 teaching team works closely with families to support a smooth, confident, and successful start. Parents and carers play a vital role in this process by sharing information that helps us understand their child’s strengths, interests, individual needs, and any specific support that may assist with a positive transition to secondary school.
Enrolment interview
Before your child begins, families may be asked to meet with our principal. This is a time to share:
- medical conditions or allergies
- family circumstances that may affect your child’s start
- any learning or wellbeing needs.
We will also explain the supports our school provides, such as:
- support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through personalised learning pathways
- extra support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
- support for students with disability or other learning needs through inclusive education programs.

Our transition program
At Wyong High School we work closely with local primary schools to help students feel ready. Our transition to high school programs help Year 6 students get ready for Year 7. Activities may include:
- orientation days and school tours
- parent information sessions and meet the teacher events
- subject tasters and classroom visits
- peer support activities with older students.
Students, parents and carers can join these sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. If you need an interpreter, let us know.
